5 Reasons You Shouldn't Delay Dental Checkups

Not too many people get excited about visiting the dentist. In fact, some absolutely dread dental checkups so much that they put them off. However, it is still important to see your dentist every six months for a checkup, even if your teeth and gums seem fine. Here are a few reasons why you should not delay these dental checkups.

Detect Cavities Early

Just because you are not experiencing any pain, does not mean you do not have cavities. Cavities often do not show symptoms in the early stages, so you may not know you even have them. Dentists perform X-rays to detect cavities in their early stages. The earlier a cavity is found, the easier it is to treat.

Check for Oral Cancer

During a checkup, your dentist will also use a special light to check for signs of oral cancer. As long as it's detected in the early stages, oral cancer is very treatable. On the other hand, if the disease is caught too late, it can be life-threatening.

Save Money

Some people may avoid going to the dentist because they think it is too expensive. However, delaying dental checkups could actually cost you more money in the future. For example, your small cavity can progress into a bigger one and require a root canal. Getting a root canal is much more expensive than just getting a simple dental filling.

Improve Overall Health

Believe it or not, there is a connection between your oral health and overall health. For example, if you have advanced gum disease, the bacteria can travel to your heart and cause a heart attack. If you visit your dentist every six months, they will check for early signs of gum disease and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Boost Your Self-Confidence

Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. If your teeth are stained or chipped, it can lower your self-esteem and even prevent you from smiling. By going to the dentist regularly, you can fix these kinds of imperfections and feel better about yourself. For example, if your teeth are discolored, your dentist can apply a whitening treatment.

As you can see, there are a lot of good reasons to see a dentist on a regular basis. If it has been more than six months since your last dental checkup, you should schedule an appointment at a local family dental clinic.
